Scone Recipe Round-Up

If you could wake up to your “dream” morning every morning, what would it look like? Would you hit snooze a few extra times? Maybe get up early and get a head start on your day. Or maybe you would wake up to breakfast in bed every morning and have nothing on your to-do list for the morning?

Ok, second question. If you chose breakfast in bed what would you want brought to you? Remember this is a dream so anything goes and dream big because there’s no dishes to clean up in “dream mornings”.

Would you have a big stack of your favorite pancakes? Maybe something more savory like a vegetable omelette?

If you asked me, I would choose the no to-do list, alarm snoozed with breakfast in bed (no dishes after, of course) with a giant cup of coffee and a freshly baked blueberry scone on the tray. Man oh man, does that sound like the ideal morning or what?

Well, while I can’t make your wildest morning dreams come true, I can at least help if you’re like me and have a love for freshly baked scones and a good cup of coffee in the morning.

When it comes to coffee, I’m a straight black with a pinch of splenda kind of gal. Call me lame, call me old lady, whatever you want to call me I don’t care as long as I get my coffee in the mornings. When drinking it without a bunch of additions you tend to care more about the beans and way it’s brewed. After many, many cups of joe I’ve found the french press to be my favorite way to brew and a dark or medium roast bean to give the best flavor. My current go-to is the Martha Stewart Espresso Blend. I’ve been making this in my french press on the weekends and using the single serve capsules during the week when my mornings are a little busier. I love the flavor from the beans when brewed and I’m a stickler for a stronger cup and this one does the job perfectly.

Now for the scones. Something about a flaky scone with bursts of fresh berries just gives me that cozy, morning feeling. It’s my go-to pastry when I grab a pastry in the morning and it’s something I usually order when on trips as I love trying new flavors or seeing if I find one that beats my top pick. After many scones, I found my perfect scone. It was actually 8 years ago in NYC at a market in Grand Central Station. It was the last market before the exit to the street and it was a chocolate chip scone. It’s my favorite because 8 years later when I think of all the scones I’ve had this one still comes to mind first. Perfectly moist/dry, good layers of flaky butter and hints of sweetness with the mini chocolate chips.

Now I’m dreaming of this scone, but back to the breakfast dream. When it comes to making the perfect scone at home, it’s best to find a good base recipe you like and then you can always mix up the add-ins and flavor combinations. I personally like a bit drier of a scone as I don’t like it to taste too much like a biscuit so I lean towards a drier base but it’s all personal preference. Below are some tried and true scone recipes and bases that I’ve made and flag as my personal favorites.
