Last week when I was planning my post for Monday about unplugging from social media and electronics I didn’t intend for it to mean I would literally unplug for a week.
Yeeaahh…so about going all MIA on you last week…I wish I had an explanation but in all honesty I was just out having fun. Fun and no posts? I know, I know. I’m sorry but hey, I’m back now and ready for a new week with posts!
With summer in full swing (finally!) things always seem to move a hundred miles a minute. It’s like as soon as the warm weather hits, I black out. Sometimes from being over heated but no I’m talking the black out where you go to work on Monday and your boss says “how was your weekend? did you do anything fun?” and you start sweating and your mouth feels dry because you think “shoot, what did I do this weekend? Is this a trick question? I thought it was still Friday.”. Yup, that black out.
I think if my life was a movie during the summer it would look a lot like a time lapse video of me waking up, going to work, popping by an event, grabbing drinks on a rooftop with friends, going to a local festival, traveling to see friends/family, friends/family coming in town and then me crashing each night still in my clothes from work.
Yup, that’s about right. So who wants tickets to see the show?
Kidding, talk about a box office bust.
Anyways, last week between having friends in town, plans for local festivals and city activities and it being my last week with my foster puppy, I decided to slow down, enjoy the moments (and cocktails) and let the e-mails flood in because at the end of the day nobody was going to get hurt if I waited more than 24 hours to reply. But I do apologize if you got a majorly delayed e-mail reply while I was out catching up with friends and taking the puppy on walks with my phone back at home. Sometimes we all just need that week to unplug and get back on track so I’m sharing my top tips for those weeks when you just need to unplug.
Turn it off and walk away.
Because when all else fails, you just have to put it down and walk away…literally.
Hide the chargers.
If you’re like me and have zero self control with not answering e-mails every free second you get then my best advice is to hide the charger. If I’m on my computer as midnight and the charger is right there I’ll typically find myself staying up until everything is done but if it’s about to die with no charger around and I know I should be going to bed, I’ll shut it off and save it for the morning.
Write reminders.
As silly as it sounds, writing reminders of why you need to unplug or the things that you could be doing instead of being glued to your electronics can be the most helpful way to stick with your plan.
Make plans (no electronics allowed).
Not ones that involve instagram-worthy places so that you are tempted to take out your phone but ones that involve relaxing and catching up with friends/family you may have not seen in awhile or a wine night with the girls where you can wear your sweats with no makeup and drink wine until you forget that you still have work in the morning..opps.
